Contextual Safeguarding

About the Course

Contextual Safeguarding is a national framework to help better protect young people experiencing disadvantages and vulnerabilities within their schools, environments, and wider communities.

This is an approach to understanding and responding to young people’s experiences of significant harm beyond their families. Traditional approaches to protecting young people from harm have focused on the risk of violence and abuse from inside the home, usually from a parent/carer or other trusted adult.

As a result, they do not always address the time that young people spend outside the home and the influence of peers on young people’s development and safety.

In this course, learners will find out more about contextual safeguarding.

The learning objectives are as follows:

  • To understand the meaning of Contextual Safeguarding

  • To be aware of relevant research and case examples

  • To know why Contextual Safeguarding is imperative to practice in terms of policy, framework, and practice

  • To be aware of organisational challenges

  • To know about the risk factors facing young people (child sexual exploitation, child criminal exploitation, going missing, e-safety, gang/knife crime, and radicalisation)

  • To understand multi-agency benefits and support
